Luau Luncheon

Parker's first year of preschool at Little Red Wagon is over and they had a Mom's Luau Luncheon toward the end of the year. The kids sang us some songs and then we all got to sit on beach towels together while we enjoyed the Hawaiian lunch the school provided. As you may know, Parker LOVES music. He loves singing, dancing, and listening to music, but absolutely not when he is asked to do so. You might be able to guess that this means that when he's up on stage he just stands there silently until the end and then he claps. Of course this also means that as soon as he's sitting in the stroller or the back seat of the car he belts out the songs. His "performance" at the Luau Luncheon was no exception. He and his classmates were all super cute, though.

Big Road

Parker has really been getting into Magna-Tiles lately. We usually either build a structure that ends up being a garage for his cars or he lays them out into a "big road" like he did here.

Conway is Fifteen Months Old!

Well, by the time this posts Conway will actually be almost 16 months old, but check this kid out. Have I mentioned before that Conway is CRAZY?! Okay, but seriously. He does not sit still. Gone are the days of getting him to sit on the couch nicely with a little piece of paper announcing his age. Instead I've chosen to embrace his craziness and present an honest depiction of life with Conway. See the mayhem unfold below. The pictures are pretty blurry, but I think the blurriness captures Conway's nonstop movement perfectly.

Conway is a walking, running, jumping (although his feet don't actually leave the ground) machine. His first love is still balls - throwing, kicking, and even some dribbling. In addition to being full of energy, Conway is also full of smiles, laughs, hugs, and kisses. When he gives kisses now he actually purses his lips together and makes a kissing sound. It's basically the best.

Conway's sleep hasn't changed much since he turned one. He's still taking two naps most of the time (10:15 - 11:45 & 2:15 - 4:00). When we're out and about and he's kept busy enough he does fine with one longer nap (12:45 - 4:00), but if we're just around the house in the morning he gets pretty cranky without that first nap. The biggest change with his sleep is that he basically doesn't make any of the moaning sounds during the night (7:45pm - 7:15am) that use to wake me up. I'm not sure when his moaning/whining during the night stopped, but it seems like forever ago that it last happened so it must have been shortly after he turned one.

Sometime after turning one Conway also developed a bit of separation anxiety. When we leave him with a sitter he either cries as we leave or we have to distract him in some way. If he's in his high chair eating he does fine and if the babysitter holds him as we talk about the logistics of her time with the kids he usually does okay as well. Either way, he seems to be fine shortly after we're gone (or so we're told). The separation anxiety is actually the most difficult when I'm trying to get something done around the house. He starts out with a whine, then he pulls on my legs and whines louder, and eventually throws his whole body on the floor and cries. It's all quite sad (and also a bit hilarious) to watch.

I'm not sure if this separation scenario would be easier or more difficult if Conway had a more expansive vocabulary. Most of what he says is pretty much unintelligible. He does say "bah" for ball and "dah" for dog, but he uses both of those sounds to mean other things sometimes. I think Conway's first real word is bye bye, which actually sounds more like "bah bye" and is always accompanied by a wave. He also waves to say hello and sometimes adds a "hah" with it. Conway can use sign language to say the following: more, all done, milk, please (which for him actually means help, I want something), and thank you.

Conway's big brother Parker does what we call Independent Play Time almost every day from 6:00pm to 6:30pm while I make dinner. Conway is getting too tired/hungry/needy at that time of day so he still spends my dinner prep time whining and tugging at my legs (Fun!). He has started his own Independent Play Time, though, at a time of day that is better suited to him. While Parker and I read books together before Parker's nap, Conway plays independently in his own room. He's doing pretty well with it now and it's quite fun listening to him have a good time playing on his own. The transition went something like this. The first day was painful - he basically laid by the door and cried for the whole 10 minutes. I decided to give it a week, though, and on the second day he cried for only a minute (which of course felt like 10 minutes) and then he started playing! He still whines or cries a little bit as I leave the room, but I love that he can happily play all on his own.

And now take a look at Conway getting a kick out of me trying to take his picture.

{Running}

{And laughing}

{And giggling}

{Distracted by the camera}

{Quick pause for a kiss}

{Parker joined in for a "family hug"}

{He's pretty pleased with this new trick - walking with his hands behind his back}

{Back to running}

{Oh wait - jump}

{More jumping although feet don't actually leave the ground}

{And back to running}

{Pause to say hi}

{And get a quick cuddle}

We love you Conway!!

Boys Long Weekend at Home!

Guest blogger here, and I'm a bit delayed in this blog post....BUT, Treva made a break out of town a month or so ago, and left me and the boys home alone for a few days.  I got to work a half-day Thursday then goof off (aka, "Parent") for a solid three days until Treva returned on Sunday night!  Below is a timeline, in pictures, of the fun we had!

Breakfast, Day 1 - Parker is either saying hi and waving to Mama, or showing me how high he can reach before throwing some food at his little brother.
This is Conway eating something he found on floor.  It may have been a blueberry.  Potentially an ice cube.  Potentially a toe nail from the dog.  I don't really know.

Conway finally realized that Mama wasn't coming home for a while.  This, was a bummer in his mind, apparently.

Playground run, the first of many - Parker squints like that so the federal Big Brothers can't eyescan him at any point in time when they're illegally tapping into our picture libraries.  The Man is EVERYWHERE.  I taught him this.

Nickerson Street Saloon for dinner - I brought the placemat, but Nickerson brought the nutritional substance that we all just chowed down on.  In fact, Parker had to order two separate plates of food - he was both extremely hungry, and he also did a nice job sharing some with his baby brother!

Conway can drink like a Big Boy now.  As long as you hold the cup there for a while.  He's getting so BIG, hardly cries or whines at all these days, he's just such a happy baby!

Okay, well sometimes, he still rages - this is when the waitress told Parker that they were all out of Mini Corn Dog bites, which Conway now believes is an official food group.  Besides Conway's sheer disgust for improper inventory control, I just love Parker's expression here.  He's baffled.  He's alarmed that a place as holy as Nickerson could run out of Corn Dog bites.  He's legitimately confused with our waitress right now.  This was the first Apocalyptic Moment of his life - he believes the end is now coming shortly...

Day 4 - after some general cleansing activities for hygiene with Mama coming back into town, we did what Tottens do - Underwear Dance Party.  Both the boys love music - and music sounds better if you're in your underwear, it's been scientifically proven.

I'm not actually sure what this is, but when I asked Parker, he said, "Flying Squirrel - like Lil' Wayne."  I do not have any idea what that means.

Conway is equally confused - but he kind of thought this was fun.

Every good underwear dance party session starts and ends with a prayer for good rhythm and (for me), no injury.

Hard to wake him up, even go to see Mama - Dance Parties and Corn Dogs take the best out of our energy

Finally, made it to the airport to meet Mama - who had her flight delayed, which then meant we got to climb and play on about 45 chairs while we waited, so that was fun.

San Diego via Camas

David and I recently spent a glorious long weekend in San Diego...without kids! Thanks to a divide and conquer approach, the kids spent time with various family members in Camas while we got out of town. A HUGE thanks to all of them! The idea was to go somewhere warm and just relax. It was sunny and beautiful in San Diego and apparently even hotter in Camas. Here's a brief recap of each family member's experiences.

Day 1
{Conway and Parker enjoyed time at Grandma Dianna and Grandpa Terry's before Parker headed over to his cousins' house}

Day 2
{A delicious late breakfast at Mission after David's run and my (gasp!) trip to the gym}

{Hiking Cowles Mountain -  San Diego, Lake Murray, Mexico and the Pacific Ocean in the distance behind us}

{Elevation 1,591 feet above sea level - the highest point in San Diego with a 360 degree view}

{Conway's favorite toy at Grandma and Grandpa's house - a football of course}

{Parker apparently insisted on riding the bike with tassels while staying with Uncle Matt, Aunt Sarah, Philip, and Samantha}

{Popsicle break}

Day 3
{Ferry ride to Coronado Beach}

{Biking along the waterfront}

{Selfie while riding!}

{Parker and his cousins stripped down to undies and cooled off with a hose at Grandma Connie and Grandpa Bob's}

{Too hot to play inside so the Legos moved outside}

Day 4
{High fives for Grandpa Terry}

{Saying goodbye is no fun}

{Brothers reunited with kisses on the trampoline}

{One last tractor ride with Grandpa Bob}

{Tractor rides sure look fun}
